Role Exchange, 2016

Mohamad Mustafa and Nihayah Alhaj’s photographs explore the performativity of gender by challenging gendered stereotypes. In Role Exchange, the two artists exchange traditional wedding roles through dress, poses and postures to draw attention to the ways in which gender is often displayed and performed at wedding rituals. Here the female groom carries her new male bride.
