This piece reveals a female figure, navigating her way through a conflictive journey within a flux of vulnerabilities and physical discord, ceaselessly renegotiating the habitual hierarchy, which places mind over body, a research that plays within that duality’s delicate boundaries where borders merge or dissolve.
A Syrian dance and movement artist newly settled in Montreal, Hoor Malas’ practice is anchored in intimacy, physicality, and music. In If My Body Had a Name she investigates hypotheses concerning power dynamics between mind and body, dissecting the embodied resonance of gestures—especially those connected to her Middle Eastern origins—and revealing their social and sometimes repressive natures.
Talkback with the artist following the November 4th performance — Hosted by Nasim Lootij.
