With minor matter, acclaimed Dominican-born dancer and choreographer Ligia Lewis proposes an affecting constellation of metaphors relating to blackness across time. The piece combines both historical and iconic representations of popular dance, and by its end arrives at a bareness of flesh – both of the black box and its performers. Dancers Jonathan Gonzalez and Tiran Willemse join Lewis for this work, accompanied by epoch-and genre-spanning music. Steeped in the affect-spheres of the colour red, minor matter extends Lewis’ interrogation of the socially-marked body.

It is Lewis’ most recent stage work, completing the second part of a trilogy that began in 2015 with Sorrow Swag in blue.
