Made in China

Wen Wei Dance (Vancouver)

14 + 15 oct., 8 p.m.

On Canadian Tour

Made in China is an intimate performance co-created and performed by Chinese-Canadian choreographer Wen Wei Wang, artistic director of the Beijing Modern Dance Company Gao Yanjinzi, musician Qiu Xia He and media artist Sammy Chien. The four artists culled snippets from their memories, heritage, and personal histories—childhood in China, training during the cultural revolution, career paths, inspirations—to form a collective biography that is unapologetically subjective. Made in China gives explosive life to these memories and inquiries through dance, music, storytelling, and multimedia.

Vancouver-based Wen Wei Dance company here creates a generous, inventive production that employs contemporary practices to revive tradition in a visual and choreographic conception that is at once touching, subtle, and breathtaking. Far from having pejorative connotations, then, Made in China conjures the development of a lively and ambitiously artistic culture.

Wen Wei Dance, led by Wen Wei Wang who formed the company after his arrival and successful career launch in Canada, creates startling and provocative works of a distinctive trans-cultural sensibility. The company has produced nine full-length works, garnered numerous awards, and showcased its polymorphic talents internationally, from Shanghai to the Venice Biennale in Italy.
