On a world tour

Islam Chipsy & EEK (Cairo, Egypt)

Oct. 28 + 29, 8 p.m.

A three-piece musical force of nature, Islam Chipsy & EEK deliver one of Planet Earth’s most astonishing live-music experiences. Bandleader and electro chaabi keyboard pioneer Chipsy is flanked by drummers Mohammed Karam and Mahmoud Refat on dual kits, raining down a percussive maelstrom. Chipsy’s freewheeling attack seizes the standard oriental scale system, warping it into otherworldly shapes.

“_Exploding out of Cairo_,” when “_one of the most exciting propositions on the planet_” appeared at Foreign Affairs 2016 (Berliner Festspiele), and sending crowds “_wild_” in Bristol, London, and Newcastle , Islam Chipsy & EEK have blazed an electrifying trail through Europe.

The band’s electrifying 2014 bootleg Live at the Cairo High Cinema Institute was followed a year later by Kahraba, their debut studio album.

“In Cairo, the three-piece are usually hired to play large outdoor wedding celebrations and their sound has developed in tandem with a need to kickstart parties…. Now, playing indoors through really powerful rigs, their sound has morphed into something that is bordering on overwhelming.” — The Guardian
