Prix de la diversité 2015

African Guitar Spirit (Montréal)

Jan. 15, 2016

Recipient of the Prix de la diversité

Sixth recipient of the Prix de la diversité, is the new venture by artist Gotta Lago. This relentless adventurer and his collaborators invite us on a voyage across both familiar landscapes and towards a new musical horizon. African guitar from its roots to present day!

Pursuing his ongoing musical research and global art philosophy, Gotta Lago creates a polyphonous sound between forest and savannah, and that embraces the constant renewal of African vocal arts, and explorations into music by the Pygmy and the Fulani people.

Languorous and occasionally rebellious, a bountiful mix of traditional and urban melodies meets the blues, blending with Senegalese, takamba or jazz rhythms. Collaborators include the virtuoso percussionist Sadio Sissokho and subtly insistent bassist Carlo Birri.

Recipient of the Coup de Coeur des Francos award in 2012, Gotta Lago released the festive 2014 album Carnets de route Soweto-Marrakech.

Since its inception, the up-and-coming group has performed at Toronto’s Mississauga Waterfront Festival and Festival Nomade in Montreal, among other events. African Guitar Spirit breathes new life into this cultural mélange with a resolutely acoustic sound.

The Prix de la diversité is made possible by the support of MAI, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and Vision diversité.
