American Boy

Hetain Patel (Londres)

Dec. 11 + 12, 2015

World tour

What do Spider-Man, Bruce Lee and Agent Smith from The Matrix have in common? They have all made their home in Hetain Patel’s unfettered imagination! In a dizzying balancing act, Patel’s performance transports us to a world where over twenty characters from Hollywood films, TV series and comic books share the stage. With a personal and humorous take on identity shape-shifting, he shakes up our understanding of who we really are.

With a soundtrack including Michael Jackson and Mozart, the iconoclastic Briton carefully choreographs the alter egos that have helped forge his personality. Using caustic humour, the Londoner confounds stereotypical male behaviour while criticizing a popular culture which glorifies violence and greed. Deceitfully candid, American Boy is more than just a satirical self-portrait.

His work uses the body as a site for questioning notions of identity, a theme he has been working with for many years. Protean artist Hetain Patel has choreographed for Candoco Dance Company, and created a commissioned piece as part of the 56th Venice Biennale. Internationally renowned visual artist Hetain Patel has been exhibiting his multidisciplinary works since 2004.

Following a series of sold-out UK shows in 2014, American Boy continues its world tour until 2016.
