Complexe R

Compagnie de danse EBNFL?H (Montréal)

12 – 14 nov. 2015

In a society where we are constantly trying to surpass our personal limits we must ask ourselves if our collective conscious is taking a dive. Can we resist the excesses of modern life or will they end up permanently scarring our mental health? This is the question Alexandra ‘Spicey’ Landé, choreographer and artistic director of Compagnie de danse EBNFL?H, asks in Complexe R, which alludes to that part of the brain that has been nicknamed the Reptile Brain because the behavioral traits for which it is responsible are most often observed in, and associated with reptiles. These include pure survival instinct, competition, aggression, ritual, and motor skills.

Her ongoing quest to de-compartmentalize and to reorder dance hierarchies has resulted in choreographies greatly influenced by urban dance – particularly by Hip Hop. For her most recent creation, Landé assembled a quintet of street dancers to explore the complexes, limits and obsessions of everyday life. Hunger for power and a frenzied search for visibility and recognition make up the symptoms of a collective pathology to be either resisted through rebellion or evaded via false paradises.

Having fallen under the spell of street dance in 1986, Alexandra ‘Spicey’ Landé is familiar with all of its variations and has significant influence in the field. In 2005, she founded Les Productions Unkut to contribute to the advancement of urban dance through teaching and special events and subsequently created the now hugely successful Bust a Move Festival. Heavily influenced by African American hip-hop dancers, she has developed a unique choreography style pushing hip hop dance to new limits. As a choreographer, Landé is on a quest for authenticity, inspired by daily gestures and addressing universal issues. A background that complements her artistic vision and is now at the heart of this emerging company: EBNFL?H.
