4 Solos

Aakash Odedra Company (Londres)

Oct. 30 + 31, 2015

Quebec premiere

Aakash Odedra is trained in the classical Indian dance styles of Kathak and Bharat Natyam, a training he has incorporated in a unique synthesis with contemporary dance. In 4 Solos, he transforms dance into a sacred act and opens up poetic universes as different as they are spellbinding, with two solos of his own creation and two others created by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan.

Nritta means pure dance, and displays the coming together of the male and female to give birth to a form in perfect balance. In the visceral In the Shadow of a Man, choreographer Akram Khan explores his continuous fascination with the ‘animal’ within, fascinated to discover if there was an animal residing deep within the shadow of Aakash’s own body.

Mohe Apne Hi Rang Mein (Sufi Kathak) is rooted in Sufi Kathak, a unique form of Kathak that fuses classical vocabulary with the mysticism of Sufi spirituality. Highlighted in Constellation are the different patterns of sound and the different sources of light that come together to create a constellation, with the dancer as the locus; the astral body generating its own rhythms and luminosity.

Aakash Odedra studied in both India and the United Kingdom. He formed Aakash Odedra Company in 2011 as a vehicle for commissioning solos and to develop his own choreographic work. He has danced, among others, for*Akram Kahn* who mentored him in a search for a more contemporary language. Recipient of several awards, he has also choreographed for the European Network of Performing Arts’ 2010 ChoreoLab, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the closing of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

« Le chorégraphe indo-britannique Aakash Odedra ne manque pas de cordes à son arc. Virtuose du kathak, style classique du nord de l’Inde, qu’il pratique depuis l’âge de 8 ans, il a développé une ligne de danse dont l’incroyable amplitude a accroché l’œil. » – Le Monde
