Unwrapping Culture

Pichet Klunchun (Bangkok) + Alvin Erasga Tolentino (Vancouver)

Oct. 23 + 24, 2015

Quebec premiere

Filipino-Canadian choreographer Alvin Erasga Tolentino and Thailand’s Khon dancer Pichet Klunchun conspire to create Unwrapping Culture, a genuine cultural inquisition.

Guided by Khon, a royal court dance from Thailand traditionally performed by men in masks, this iconoclastic duo considers the values of continuity, and the legacy of traditional forms while co-authoring a contemporary, hybrid language. With narrative, movement and theatrics, they mischievously deconstruct popular culture and, in particular, commercial Thai cultural icons. Unwrapping Culture coerces and encourages disparate worlds to collide in an implacable yet playful indictment on tradition and modernity, preservation and innovation.

Pichet Klunchun has trained in Khon (Thai Classical Mask Dance) since the age of sixteen, and is considered its undisputed master of the international stage. With great sensitivity, this rebel from Bangkok fuses contemporary themes with traditional Thai dances. A renowned soloist and choreographer, he received the prestigious John D. Rockefeller Award in New York in 2013.

Exloring issues of gender, identity and cross-cultural dialogue, Alvin Tolentino Erasga, is among Canada’s most active dance artists. Unwrapping Culture marks a return to the MAI stage following his quintessential solo Colonial (2012), a significant interdisciplinary work depicting the painful colonial past of the Philippines. Founder of Co.Erasga Dance now entering its 15th season, Tolentino has had his creations presented across Canada, in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Venezuela, Uruguay, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines and the United States.

« What is unique about Tolentino is his ability to push dance boundaries with fresh, new dance movement. He is unconventional yet expressive and therein lies his strength. » – REVIEW VANCOUVER
