2013 Diversity Award

January 24th & 25th 2014

January 24th and 25th 2014

Since forming in 2010, Trio Populaire has been diligent in combining the different influences of each of its members into a coherent whole, its trademark being the out-of-ordinary mix of flamenco guitar, the North African darbuka and Jewish melodies. Rhythms from three differing shores of the Mediterranean meet and intermingle. Klezmer music, Brazilian choro, Romani, North African and Berber rhythms, flamenco…these are but some of the sources that the Trio Populaire draws for its repertoire, enhanced in concert by vocal percussion and soaring harmonies.

Winner of the 2013 Diversity Award, Trio Populaire is the product of three distinct personalities, three musicians who share an affinity for a rich variety of musical styles: Pierre Emmanuel Poizat, clarinettist and avid multi-instrumentalist, Tacfarinas Kichou, a self-taught musician with a passion for percussion – derbuka, bendir, cajón, riq, bongos – and Joey Mallat, guitarist and author-composer. Festival du Monde Arabe, the Festival de musique du Maghreb, Festival des Traditions du Monde de Sherbrooke…*Trio Populaire* are renowned for their live performances and their virtuosity.

The Diversity Award recognizes a musical artist or group for excellence in hybridic and world music, and who stem from one of Montréal’s diverse cultural communities – awarded by the MAI in collaboration with the Conseil des arts de Montréal, Place des Arts and Vision Diversité.
