April 6 to May 11, 2013

Vernissage : samedi 6 avril – 15 h

The annual SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) contemporary art exhibition presents the broad range of work being carried out by its members. Chosen by a jury following a call for submissions, the work on exhibit is a revealing glimpse into the variety of artistic and sociopolitical concerns of contemporary South Asian artists.

A dazzling portrait of twenty-first-century contemporary art, this event will introduce viewers to works that are arduous and contemplative, and through which themes of diaspora merge with new ways of examining South Asian economies, politics and culture.

This year, in collaboration with the MAI, SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre) is exhibiting these works in Montreal in order to engage with the existing discourse of contemporary diasporic, intercultural art production. Two artists from Ontario – Sarindar Dhaliwal & Atanas Bozdarov, and two from Québec – Khadija Baker & Mona Sharma present work that address the complications of a universal Canadian multiculturalism, as well as a monolithic notion of diaspora.

Founded in 1997, SAVAC *is the only artist-run centre in Canada devoted to contemporary art created by artists of South-East Asian origin. This non-profit Toronto group mounts its annual off-site exhibitions in collaboration with a variety of Canadian cultural organizations. *Le 7e registre is the first of their events to be held in Quebec and the first time the group has collaborated with the MAI – a partnership that is sure to inspire a transcultural dialogue on a regional, provincial and national level.

In collaboration with SAVAC
