From January 18 to 20, 2008, the MAI invites you to discover Alexandra “Spicey” Landé, one of the featured Montreal-based choreographers in its 2007-2008 Dance Series. Inspired by her passion for hip-hop, she boldly breaks the rules while revealing the expressive force of the genre in Retrospek.

In her new piece where music and physical expression play off each other to powerful effect, the exuberant choreographer shares her contagious energy, further intensified by the enclosed space of the MAI.

Landé’s vocabulary melds urban dances and theatre to deliver a message that calls for social consciousness, as it did in the early days of hip-hop in the Bronx. Educator and theatre director Veronica Melis lends her expertise to Landé’s work which combines movement and emotion to evoke Retrospek’s themes of love, passion, dispair, and death.

Driven by her desire to “make Montreal a turntable of the evolution of urban dance in North America”, the choreographer is supported by an impressive cast of nine dancers, masters of their respective styles which include locking, popping, hip-hop, b-boying, and house. For Landé, the urge to create Retrospek arose from looking back on her life as a young Haitian-born woman and a career shaped by her love for hip-hop dance. The work she does with her collective is defined by a commitment to transmit an artistic heritage and a constant need for renewal, vitality, and openness.
